Hi-I'm a collector and restorer of home recording machines. I have the machine my family used in the early 40's through early 50's, which is the first I ever restored. I have a pretty large collection of "home made" records as well, and I've written a few articles over the years about the machines, records, recording techniques, etc. Perhaps you would like to correspond off the forum?

The home recording machines were not prohibitively expensive for a middle class family, but the quality was not anywhere close to a professional recording. I have quite a bit of original advertising and factory/company literature so I can give you pretty accurate period prices. For example, a Wilcox-Gay Recordio (a popular brand and basically the first mass produced for home use) in the early 40's would have a list price of $129.95 for a radio/phonograph/recorder in a console furniture cabinet. Blank records cold be hand for as low as 12 cents each for the fiber based small discs, with the price increasing with size and quality.

Let me know what you would like to know. I wrote an article on the W-G machines many years ago for Antique Radio Classified magazine, which I have posted online at:

Let me know if I can be of further assistance!

I am writing a book and need information about records made privately. When I was a kid, my grandmother played a record for me that her brother and his buddies had made back in what I think was the 1930's. I don't want to include this in the book unless I know what I am talking about. Can anyone help? Especially interested in what the cost would have been.
Thanks!

As one who has transcribed hundreds, if not thousands of 78's of all eras for broadcast use, I can concur that your stylus will be just dandy for nearly every 78 you come across.

You may want to give some consideration to equalization, however. If you play through a modern turntable into a modern phono input, your records will be subject to the RIAA equalization curve which became the standard in the mid 50's but didn't exist when most 78's were made. In very general terms, this will give you too much bass and roll off the highs. the cheapest way around this is to find a phono pre-amp that has the ability to turn on and off the RIAA equalizatiion curve, and to use the auxilary, CD, video, or whatever other line input you have available rather than a phono input. If asked, I'll recommend a couple places online that sell them. You just don't get the full potential and sound quality from 78's through a modern RIAA phono input. I like the Rek-O-Kut Re-Equalizer, but that's a bit much for a casual listener. But it gives you several equalization schemes to try out.

As for your weight, what does the cartridge manufacturer list? I believe Shure lists 1.5 to 3 grams for that cartridge/stylus (going from memory here). I'd start at 2 and see how it goes.

I just inherited an old phonograph and records from my great grandmother. I am wondering if someone can help me identify what it is and what the value is. It is a cherry cabinet with the left side for holding records and the right side for playing records. The label on the right side interior is says Sonora "Clear as a Bell" Sonora Inc. New York New York No. 841278-30R then there is "tourainl" but I am not sure exactly because it is scratched. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also inherited boxes of records that I have not cataloged yet but they look like they are mostly from the 1920's-1960's.

Hello! My first time on here. Does anyone have info on a single-sided 78 I have by IAN COLQUHOUN who was a baritone. I have seen this name elsewhere as IAIN and is likely the same person. This label is black with gold lettering and sunburst. In research it appears it was modified by the Memphis Sun label but not, in particular, argued in a lawsuit over other breaches of some type. So far it seems to have come out of Canada by Compo but with, possibly, an OKEH connection. The song is HOLY CITY and the record number is 45386. I have not found any pictures of this label anywhere though there is reference to it. The back is blank but for a small black, gold lettered label regarding the use of the record and patent info. The record number is stamped backwards on the lead out. There is also 8763D stamped backwards on the opposite side of the label from the other number in the lead out. Anyone have anything to more to add to help me please?
Thank you!

I've acquired about 100 78's, different labels, varying types of music. I know next to nothing about them and am wondering what numbers to use when cataloguing them for sale? For example: Columbia Record C1107 also has the number CO38826 on one side and CO38827 on the other. If anyone can give me an idea of how I should catalogue them I'll compile a list and post it if anyone on here is interested in possibly buying. Thanks in advance,

Another possibility is to watch E-bay for an Audak made reproducer that fits onto the Victor arm. It is, if I remember correctly, gun metal finish with a cover over its aluminum diaphragm. This should have enough compliance to allow the safe playing of electrically recorded records through the 50 and it will sound pretty decent too.

Hi, first time posting here...so bear with me!

I'm a newby phonograph owner (wife bought me a VV-50 for Christmas. I broke it down and cleaned and oiled the motor. Took me a full day practically! The reproducer works well, but I still want to rebuild it too. Let me say, I've fallen in love with this hobby! Quite frankly, I've become obsessed with it these days on my vacation!)

Anyhow, I have some pre and post 1935 78s that I've played on it, but from what I read on this site, playing post 1935 records with an acoustic needle is a no no. I should be playing anything post 1935 with an electric stylus I believe.

So here is my issue. I really want to play the post 1935 78s (they are from about 1947, columbia red lables), but I don't want to destroy them. Can I play them with bamboo needles on my victrola without destroying the records? I've tried it and they sound well! (I cut a few bamboo needles with success!) But am I doing the same thing with the bamboo as I am with a metal needle, or will the bamboo prevent damaging the 1947 records?

RELATED to this, when I see a small amount of black residue on the needle tips after playing, does this mean I am actually destroying the records and the dust/residue is remains of the record? (Note: I see this with metal needles AND bamboo needles - both materials collect the black dust. AND I see it happening on the older pre 1935 records that I've played too! So this puzzles me. Why are the pre 1935 78s getting cut up when they were designed for playing with needles?)

I should add, I always use new needles for each playing.

If you've read this far, thanks in advance!

Hi Sunny, yeah, some gems would be nice, but I'm thinking more along the lines of a family collection to hand down to my kids one day. My father was quite a fanatical collector and maintained most of the records is near perfect condition. He really loved Sinatra and Barbara Streisand and labelled a plastic cover over the albums and singles with the specific number from each record company. He literally has every single recording Sinatra ever made, including foreign ones. They're neat to look at and I have the space to maintain them indefinitely.

Best Regards,

Hi Mike,

The inclusion of the series number would be a boon to collectors trying to pinpoint the age and value. Good thinking. Although, if you have a large collection, it might be a little time consuming (LOL). Perhaps you'll find that you have some hidden gems, eh?

My father recently passed away and left me with an absolutely massive collection of records. I would like to start the process of cataloging in a professional way in an Excel spreadsheet and was wondering if one of the experts on this site had one, or could tell me what fields I should have in the spreadsheet to do it right. I would like to take my time over many months, perhaps years and put every field of data a professional from the music industry would appreciate. I would also prefer not to use one of the programs I've seen on the web and just stick with an Excel spreadsheet format.

Any advise would be appreciated.

In my day-to-day existence, I might wish pandora rings to gown up for a lot of pursuits, such as others' parties, and also the dates with my pals or classmates. As to dressing myself up, I prefer to wear some jewellries that can match that day's clothing and event. I've to admit that I have several jewellries during my box. I'm keen on collecting different jewelries for example necklaces, bracelets, charms and so on. Normally, a number of them I bought at the quite higher charges as a result of their well-known brand as well as the high qualitirs. Some of these I bought at the very low cost but hold the very poor qualities. I'm so irritated that in which I can purchase the less costly but large top quality products until I uncover the net store: Thomas Sabo Jewellery.
I have recognized that Thomas Sabo Jewellery are incredibly famous on earth. Also as, everyone knows that their rates also are extremely higher. So l seldom acquire these kinds of jewellry for my personal. I simply get them for my expensive friends and people. Now, I get them for my own within the Thomas Sabo Jewelry. I obtain the Thomas Sabo Charms which all are with the acceptable prices. I am so stunned that I find that you will find countless types of pandora bracelet there. All are created so beautiful that I really like them a great deal. I cannot aid myself getting a lot of Thomas Sabo Charms from this website: http://www.fashionthomassabo.com. Now my collection box is filled with many diverse types of Thomas Sabo Charms. Numerous pals of mine surprise why I buy so many charms, "Are you crazy?" Hehe, really, I'm not crazy.
These charms I acquire are all created with organic crystal, real, silver, pearl or pther chosen resources. All make sure they are the genuine items. Nobody can assume that they are well worth buying much. I feel that this kind of jewellry will make a girl shine like a princess at any situations we take part in.In my collection box, the one particular I love considerably may be the pandora earrings 18 Allure.

Hi Joe--your info puts our minds at ease. We have so many 78 albums (Tango and other ethnic music collections--waltzes--good ol' Bing Crosby sets, etc.) that were produced in the 30's and 40's and so hoping that we could skip the steel needle route recommended on the album covers and records & use this Shure cartridge without damaging the records. The on-line source-- Jerry Raskins Needle Dr thought this would be the best cartridge to use in our price range.

The Garrard 95B SL we will use has an adjustable weight on the end of the tonal arm. Any recommendations on a good setting for 78's with a more modern unit? Ha--I still think of the 60's as modern.

We will save the 20's records for the Victrola VV-40 and use steel needles.

I recently purchased what seems to be a very old hand crank Silvertone portable phonograph. It works beautifully, has a speed adjustment screw, record compartment, hand crank, and extra needles in a holding compartment with a spring loaded lid. I have searched and searched the internet hoping to find out just how old it is and am having no luck. If you can give me any info or point me in the right direction it would certainly be appreciated!

Hello, I just joined your forum today, I'm hoping to find a few answers about my new ResselBell Phonograph player, which is built into a beauitful ornate Tiger oak Sideboard with all it's orignal hardware in place. I date the sideboard around the late 1920's or so. The speaker is made of thin oak, which is built into the inside cabnet under the phonograph. The sound is very pleasent and clear. Works real well. If you would like some photos you may send me a email sspagnolo@ca.rr.com
Not sure how to upload photos on this forum.

Thanks,

In this collection there are 18 with paper labels not sure if they were gold since they are all faded. These are after 1921 and two are in the 52000 series.
I have 13 that are Pre 1921 a few have the Grey lettering (about 5-6)then there are 13 more that do not have a record number but there are numbers engraved on both sides that are not the same I assume this is a song number. I have had these in my closet since 1996 when My mother passed away. I also have a desk that my grandparents converted from a Thomas Edison Phonograph Cabinet( they removed the speakers and made drawers and shortened the legs) all these disks have been stored wrapped in news paper.
Not sure how to proceed but I am trying to let go of some of my past and keeping these all these years seem too much and its time.

Replying to myself (!) to add that, on close inspection, one can see a paper label reading "Pathé Freres, Brooklyn, N.Y. through the holes in the platen (that explains the Pathé speed adjust!).

Was the electric drive assembly sourced from Pathé for Echo-la
or,
Was it a retrofit of a better drive than original, which may have been a spring motor?

The metal grommet (esturcheon?) on the wood frame, where the electrical cord comes out looks like it could be where the original crank was...

Friendly neighbor just gave me an electric-drive "Echo-La phonograph.

Total non-collector newbie, this is my first few hours with it, and I am carefully examining the beast first.
The electric cord is broken so I do not know if motor is working. We tried it via manual spinning and horn system is all there and works, apparently.

I welcome any information about the manufacturer, even though I am aware that there used to be hundreds of them back then!

A question: The speed adjust reads "Pathé". I find that surprising. Was that common or good a device so that many manufacturers were using it as a de-facto standard, perhaps?

The speed adjust seems frozen, Could I apply a little quality sewing machine oil?

My sister has a portable wind up 78 rpm phonograph. She is trying to find any information about it.
She has sent me a picture, but I don't belive that I can post a picture on this forum.
It is a portable player in a 13X13 inch covered case. The unique feature of this player, is that there is not a tone arm mounted on the base of the machine.
Rather the speaker and reproducer are mounted in the lid of the player. When the lid is lowered, the needle contacts the record and the reproducer works its way straight across the record, tracking perfectly to play the sound. The volume is controlled by a metal plate that covers or opens the speaker opening in the lid of the player.
My e-mail is hflier@comcast.net
I would be happy to send a picture to anyone who wants one for better identification of the player and also possible potential value of the player.
